Why India Again Extended Ban on Import of Chinese Milk Products?

The Indian Government on 23rd of April extended the ban on import of Chinese milk and milk-related products such as chocolates.

The ban on import of milk products from China was initially imposed in September of 2008 and subsequently extended on the technical and chemical related grounds.

Why India again extended ban on import of Chinese milk products?

The latest order on the ban follows food regulator Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)’s recommendation that the ban on import of milk products from China should be extended till test centers at ports are “suitably upgraded” for testing presence of toxic chemical melamine.

The FSSAI functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The main aim of FSSAI is to;

  • Lay down science-based standards for articles of food
  • To regulate manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import of food
  • To facilitate Food Safety

India is the world’s largest producer of milk, and is the leading exporter of skimmed milk powder. It also exports several other milk products.

The ever- increasing rise in domestic demand for dairy products and a large demand-supply gap could lead to India being a net importer of dairy products in the future.

Countries include United States, China and Brazil are also the largest exporters of milk and milk products.
