“In the United States, there is one lawyer for every 200 people but in India, it is one lawyer for every 1,800 people.”
Ranjan Gogoi, the 46th and current Chief Justice of India recently called for increasing the lawyer population allotment in the country.
The Chief Justice said, “In the United States, there is one lawyer for every 200 people but in India, it is one lawyer for every 1,800 people.”
He also said, the “lawyer-population ration has to grow”.
Gogoi further said, “legal aid is a huge subject. In India, 67% of prisoners are undertrials, out of these undertrials, almost 47% are between 18-30 years, which means a large population of youth are under trials.”
“Quality of lawyers who are offering legal aid needs to be improved,” he added.
Ranjan Gogoi is the first person from Northeast India and first Assamese to become Chief Justice of India.
